The best European alternative to alttext.ai

alttext.ai is a US service with no EU server location. AutoAlt.ai and IMG Performer are the more European routes – with different degrees of control over the AI inference.

alttext.ai generates AI alt text reliably, but it is a US service: images are uploaded to a US cloud for processing, there is no EU server location or EU-related data-processing agreement, and the provider does not disclose the AI model it uses. For websites in the German-speaking region that is a problem. There are two more European routes: AutoAlt.ai with an EU server location, and IMG Performer with local processing and a freely chosen AI provider.

Where alttext.ai falls short

The provider (Alt-Tab LLC) is based in the USA. Every image is uploaded, processed and, according to the provider, deleted again – but the transfer to a third country does take place. Billing is via monthly quotas (Bronze about $49/year for 100 images/month, Silver about $189/year for 500, Gold about $489/year for 2,000). WebP or AVIF conversion is not included – the tool does alt text only.

AutoAlt.ai

It is operated by webAufstieg GmbH from Aalen, Germany; the servers are in the EU, and a data-processing agreement is available on request. One detail remains: the actual image recognition runs on models from OpenAI and Google, that is, US providers. The server location is European, the AI inference is not necessarily. Billing is monthly (free 50 images/month, then tiered monthly packages).

IMG Performer

IMG Performer processes the image optimization locally and generates the alt text through your own API key. You decide which model writes the descriptions – with Mistral (France) the AI inference also stays in the EU. There is no credit quota from IMG Performer itself: you pay only the actual model cost of your provider. WebP conversion is included in the free version; AVIF and the alt-text feature are in the Pro version. For how this stays data-protection compliant in detail: GDPR-compliant image optimization with AI alt text. Direct feature comparison: IMG Performer vs. AutoAlt.ai.

Frequently asked questions

So is AutoAlt.ai not GDPR-compliant?

The EU server location and the DPA are a plus. Following the inference chain down to the AI model, you still end up with US providers. With local processing and an EU model, that chain can be closed.

How good is AI alt text in German?

Current models produce usable German descriptions as a basis. For images with important detail, a quick editorial check is worthwhile.

Do I need a second plugin for WebP/AVIF if I use AutoAlt.ai?

Yes – AutoAlt.ai and alttext.ai do alt text only. Then you run two tools; IMG Performer covers both.
